Berlin wallops Frankfurt to end series

The Smurfs looked dominant in winning a series that looked so close before Game 7 started. On Tuesday, Berlin outshot Frankfurt 40-16 and they seemed to clamp down harder on the Inferno’s forwards as the game went on. The combination of Ryan Callahan and Loui Eriksson worked well for Berlin and each player scored and assisted on the other’s goal. Eriksson scored in the first period and Callahan 19 minutes later in the second. Those two led Berlin in scoring in the series. Nathan Horton scored his first goal of the series to put the game out of reach with 13 minutes left in the third. Meanwhile, Jimmy Howard was flawless in the Smurf net, although he wasn’t challenged all that much. Berlin players blocked 18 shots Tuesday, with Alexander Edler leading everyone with 5. Three of Frankfurt’s top players – Steven Stamkos, Joe Thornton and Alexander Steen – were completely neutralized, combining for a total of just 2 shots. The Smurfs advance to play Horton’s old team, Athens. The Greeks had one more point than Berlin did during the regular season and won three of four meetings this season, but the Smurfs get home-ice advantage because they won the Schloder Division and Athens finished second in the Demitra.
