Munich 5, Frankfurt 2 – Eleven different Dire Wolves earned points in a win over one of their German rivals. The win had large playoff implications, even though there is a lot of time left on the league schedule. If Frankfurt had won in regulation, they would have been a point behind 8th-place Munich with 3 games in hand. The Dire Wolf win puts a gap of 5 points between the two teams. Only Munich Dany Heatley scored more than a point in the game, as he assisted on 2 scores. Munich scored the only goal of the first period and added two in each of the next 2 periods to build a 5-0 lead with Robert Kristan taking care of the net. Gareth Roberts and Alex Steen scored late in the third period for the Inferno.
Moscow 5, Zurich 4 – Brandon Sutter scored with 19 seconds left in regulation to cap a three-goal, third-period comeback for Moscow and send the Zurich Lions home dejected. Thanks mainly to Patrick Kane’s hat trick, the Lions led 4-2 going into the final period. Sutter had earlier scored a shorthanded goal for Moscow and he earned the only assist on an Anze Kopitar goal that tied the game with 8:45 remaining. Moscow defenseman Anton Stralman was plus 4 in the game with 2 assists and 5 hits, while blueline partner Marc-Andre Bourdon was plus 3. Spartak is in first place overall … for the moment. The other team that attended the now infamous all-out bear brawl on All-Star weekend – Berlin – could pass them with a win tonight in Bratislava.
London 6, Copenhagen 2 – Shots were just about even in the game, but goalie Marc-Andre Fleury of London played better than his Copenhagen counterpart Brian Elliott. Taylor Hall led a London surge in the second period that saw them put the game out of reach. Hall assisted on goals by Sam Gagner, Teddy Purcell and Dmitri Orlov to make it 5-1 heading into the final period. Third liners Brandon Saad and Devin Setoguchi and fourth-line center Marc Arcobello played well for the Dons, all ending the night with a plus 3 rating.
Minsk 5, Helsinki 2 – Jakub Voracek led the Hussars to a convincing win over the Jokerit in Belarus Tuesday. The skilled Czech forward scored three times on 5 shots and he now has 17 this season. Playing on Minsk’s top line with Milan Lucic and Nicklas Backstrom, Voracek has improved a lot this season, as most Hussars have. He has 56 points in 57 games and is sure to surpass his personal best point total of 69, which he posted last season. And his plus-minus rating has improved from successive seasons of -26, -50 and -34 to -1 this season. the shot total was 45-27 in favor of Minsk, with Hussars Patrik Berglund and Gustav Nyquist getting off more shots than anyone else. Each had 7 shots but no points to show for it. Helsinki defensemen Nerius Alisauskas and Jack Johnson had active games, with 5 hits each and a combined 8 shot blocks, but their active style might have taken them out of position too often. They each finished with -4 rating in 27 minutes of work.
Edinburgh 6, Geneva 1 – The seventh-place Capitals stayed a point better than Minsk with a trouncing of Geneva in Switzerland. Only Nick Foligno’s powerplay goal late in the game prevented it from being a perfect win for goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and his Edinburgh teammates. Olivier Roland opened the scoring in the first period with his 21st of the season, and that was followed by a pair of Jamie Benn goals on powerplays. Edinburgh scored three more times before Foligno’s goal. Edinburgh star John Tavares added 3 assists to his point total, but tweaked his knee in the second period on a clean hit by Geneva’s Ilya Nikulin. Tavares stayed in the game but was admitted to being sore afterward.
Athens 2, Madrid 1 – Each team scored once in regulation and both goals came while Madrid’s Brian Campbell was sitting in the penalty box. Sean Couturier and Gabriel Landeskog were doing an excellent job of penalty killing and they got a goal for their effort. Landeskog was trying to hold the puck along the boards below the Athens goal line when he noticed Couturier break for the net. His pass was of the tape-to-tape variety and Couturier drilled it past Cam Ward to open the scoring and give Athens fans that feeling they’ve had too often since the Greeks’ torrid start to the season. But a little later, on the same powerplay, Kyle Palmeiri tied things up with his 12th goal of the year. Ward and Madrid goalie Robin Lehner dueled into overtime where big Dustin Byfuglien ended it with his 16th of the season.
