Three Questions

1. How can the Eagles avoid the triple? Stockholm probably shouldn’t have finished last for the second straight year last season, but it did. A poor start lingered, affected confidence and momentum, and the wheels came off. Players were sent packing and others came in and team chemistry was a misty dream that Stockholm never realized. If the Eagles can realize some early-season success, they should be able to keep lines together and build chemistry and momentum because they have talent. And they have Braden Holtby. He is the lowest-paid and youngest (24) of Stockholm’s three goalies, but he is the best. He should be between the pipes in Sweden for years and he will help them win games and climb from the basement. But he and other Stockholm players have learned to rent apartments, not buy houses. They know that when the going gets tough in Stockholm, General Manager Michael Sauer’s trade phone gets going.

2. How are the forwards? Sauer and coach Bob Hartley have assembled four sensible lines. The top three of them include a pinch of experience, a dash of grit and a handful of puck skill. Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and Bobby Ryan make a potentially deadly top line. Pavel Datsyuk, at age 36, is the leader of the second line, but the wily Russian will have a chore ahead of him in keeping young flyer Brendan Gallagher and offense-minded Derick Brassard from letting their youthful enthusiasm take them out of position or make risky plays. But they could click to become a force their foes won’t like playing against. Colin Greening, who came to Stockholm in a trade with Copenhagen, seems a little out of place with offensive-minded Craig Smith and Marcus Johansson, but the line can certainly use his grit and defensive attitude. And he will be a key penalty killer for Stockholm. The fourth line is a look into the Eagles’ future. Sean Monahan centers Ryan Johansen and Mattias Sjogren on a line of 20- to 22-year-olds who could be together for many seasons. They will take their lumps this year, but they will gain experience – and they hope develop chemistry – to cause much damage from Season 6 on.

3. How is the defense corps? If 26-year-old Jason Demers can be considered a veteran, then Stockholm has three veteran defensemen. Mike Green, 29, and Kevin Bieksa, 33, are the leaders back there. All three of the blueliners are mentoring young defensemen right now. The Eagles are stacked with young defensemen – 7 of them between the ages of 19 and 24.  Cam Fowler is the marquee member of that group. The 23-year-old is probably the best overall defenseman on the team and he is more reliable than darkness at night. He has played in every Stockholm game ever. He has scored a little more than 100 points in three-plus seasons, but is almost -100 in plus/minus rating in that time. Fowler is the key player on defense for Stockholm now and in the future.
