Pavelski heads list of free agents for frenzy

The second-leading scorer in the league last season – he’s also the fourth-leading scorer in EURO history – is shooting for the big, huge, colossal pay check.

Joe Pavelski appears to be on his way out of Madrid.

Joe Pavelski appears to be on his way out of Madrid.

Joe Pavelski, who tied for the league lead in assists with 76 and added 41 goals last season with Madrid will be the top free agent available when free agent frenzy begins Wednesday at about 11 a.m. The 30-year-old center did not resign with Madrid, passing up a chance to skate again with Rick Nash on his right and Gabriel Landeskog on his left. Pavelski is listed as a center and wing on TSN.ca.

The Sedin twins both became free agents Monday. They must be hoping a team will offer contracts to both so they can play together again. Both Boyles are also free agents, although they aren’t related to each other and probably don’t care if the other is on the same team or not.

In all, eight players with OV ratings of 80 or higher opted for free agency, giving teams a chance to get better quickly. Another eight players whose ratings are 75 or higher are also available.

The big-name free agents that will attract the most attention from GMs this week include (listed by position):

Goalie: Corey Crawford, 30, who was Cam Ward’s backup in Athens for the last two years; and Mikka Kiprusoff, 38, who was a backup in Stockholm.

Defense: The best defensemen available are 75OV men Dan Boyle of Munich and Joni Pitkanen of Zurich.

Center: Pavelski; Joe Thonton (102 points with Munich last year); Henrik Sedin (59 points with Milan); Pavel Datsyuk (54 points with London), Derek Roy (54 points with Moscow) and Brian Boyle (18 points and 146 hits with Frankfurt).

Left wing: Daniel Sedin (69 points with Oslo); Matt Moulson (72 points with Copenhagen), Chris Higgins (64 points with Moscow) and Ville Peltonen (33 points with Copenhagen)

Right wing: Thomas Vanek (61 points with Geneva) and Ryan Clowe (44 points with Helsinki)
