Moscow Spartak advanced to the EURO Cup Finals Tuesday with a convincing 5-1 in Game 6 of their series with Copenhagen. David Jones and Aleskey Morozov scored two goals each for the winners.
The Tridents finished the regular season second overall to Paris and they accumulated 5 more points than their Northern Conference rival Moscow did. But in the playoff series between the two powerhouses from different divisions, Copenhagen had difficulty getting its offense going against Moscow and goalie Jaroslav Halak. In Moscow’s 4 wins, Copenhagen scored a total of 3 goals. Halak was named the first or second star in all 4 Moscow wins and he had one of his best spells of the season in the Conference Finals. Halak’s save percentage during the regular season was 89.5, which placed him 14th among EURO goalies. In the playoffs, he raised his save percentage to 91.4, but much of the improvement came in the Copenhagen series, when he stopped 175 of 187 shots for a save percentage of 93.58. Moscowwasn’t a one-man show by any means. Take a look at what the six defensemen did as evidence. In Game 1 of the series, defensemen Kevin Dallman and Filip Kuba blocked 5 shots between them. The next game, Anton Stralman and Duncan Keith blocked 7. In Game three, the other two blueliners got into the act as Andrei Markov and Jason Garrison blocked 6. Morozov scored 4 goals against Roberto Luongo in the series, with Dustin Brown tallying 3 times. Three other Spartak players scored 2 goals in the series. Stephen Weiss led Copenhagen in goals in the series, with 3, while Shea Weber scored 2. Penalty killing was a hallmark of the series, with neither team scoring a powerplay goal in the first three games. Moscow finished the series with 4 goals in 26 man advantage situations, while Copenhagen was 2 for 23 on the powerplay. And stamina seemed to play a part as Spartak outshot Copenhagen in 5 of the 6 third periods.
Moscow will either host Athens for Game 1 of the Finals or travel west to play in Paris. The Greeks lead that series 3-2 with Game 6 coming tonight with Athens playing at home and riding a three-game win streak. Scott Hartnell has hurt the Rouge Eiffels most with 5 goals in the series thus far, while Staffan Kronwall has been the most physical Greek. Kronwall has delivered 15 hits in the 5 games, racked up 24 minutes in penalties, which includes a major penalty for checking from behind and three fights. He fought Corey Perry in Game 1, Travis Hamonic in Game 3 and Perry again in Game 4.
