Couture leads Smurfs to 2-1 win

Logan Couture, ladies and gentlemen. Nine shots on goal and both of the goals for his team in a 2-1 win Sunday. Couture is now the leading scorer in the playoffs, with 5 goals and 8 assists in just 6 games. During the regular season,he was just as effective, scoring 38 goals and 105 points. His right wing, Ryan Callahan, assisted on both goals Sunday and their linemate Loui Eriksson had 6 shots, giving the threesome a total of 20 shots on Greek goalie Cam Ward. That’s only 3 shots fewer than Berlin goalie Jimmy Howard had to deal with from the whole Athens team. Only Dustin Byfuglien was able to get one past Howard, even though Athens was able to pick up their game and get more pressure on him in the final period. The Smurfs got themselves into penalty trouble in the last two periods, but their penalty killers, especially Josh Gorges and Alex Edler, did well, blocking shots and plugging the slot. Berlin now leads the series 2-0 and they have won all 6 meetings of the two teams this season.   Game 3: Monday is a travel days for the teams. Both will fly 2 hours and 45 minutes, 1,458 km,  to the southern-most city in the EURO League. The last line change will be important for Athens, which will need to slow down the Couture line. David Backes and his line are the best of the Greeks and coach John Tortorella will want them out there more than anyone else on the team, as long as they don’t take bad penalties, like Backes did in Game 2. The big American center flattened Smurf Patric Hornqvist from behind and drew a major penalty that Berlin took advantage, scoring the game’s opening goal.

Paris star forward Corey Perry channeled his inner Tie Domi Sunday into a raucous performance, achieving a Gordie Howe hat trick and then some. In Game 1 of the series, Bratislava called up bruisers Patrick Kaleta and Antoine Roussel and the move seemed to make a difference, as the Eagles eked out a one-goal win. On Sunday, Perry took matters into his own hands … making fists with those hands a couple of times. He set up Kris Letang for the game’s first goal and then scored his 5th of the playoffs late in the first period. By the last minute of the second period, and with the Eiffels cruising along with a 4-0 lead, Perry tried to send a message to the Eagles. Weiyang Zhang, Bratislava’s hulking Chinese winger in his second season answered the door. The two battled right after a faceoff  in the neutral zone. Zhang won the fight, but Perry wasn’t done. He scheduled an impromptu rematch with Roussel about halfway through the third period. Roussel got the better of Perry in a scrap on Friday and won Sunday’s rematch as well. But the fans and Paris players and coach Michel Therrien seemed loudly appreciative of Perry’s actions.  Joffrey Lupul concentrated on hockey and led all skaters in points, with 3, while Tuukka Rask was dominant in the Paris net, allowing just one goal. Game 3:  Coaches and players will have a long time to think about who to get back at in the next game on their 3-and-a-half-hour flight from Paris to Bratislava, a distance of 1,320 kilometers. The series got very ugly on Sunday. Aside from the fights, hitting was rampant. Paris registered 27 hits Sunday, Bratislava 26.  The Paris blueline played better in Game 2 than they did in the first game, when their top pair was minus 4. In Game 2, Letang and Alex Pietrangelo each scored a goal and were plus 1. Bratislava has not been good at home and coach Bruce Boudreau said he will try to do some “imaginative” line matching to pressure and distract Perry.
