Some highlights from games played Wednesday:
Oslo 5, Edinburgh 4
Tyler Kennedy, who came into the game with 1 goal for Oslo, scored four times, including the game-tying goal in the third period and the winner in overtime. He took 5 shots and scored in all 4 periods. He’s not sure what happened on that other shot. Daniel Sedin assisted on two of his goals, as did defenseman Chris Campoli. The Ahearne Division battle allowed the Outlaws to jump two spots to 3rd place in the division.
Stockholm 6, Dublin 3
More than 20,000 Eagles fans showed up for the game against Dublin to see what Stockholm’s new kids could do. In truth, they got a little lucky, being outshot 38-24 and getting three goals from defensemen, but it was obvious to many that Stockholm has been pretty unlucky so far this season. With Dustin Brown and Rick Nash out, Stockholm cruised. Of the newly acquired players, James Van Riemsdyk had two assists, Marcus Johansson had a goal, and Jeff Carter recorded an assist. Eagle defenseman Dmitri Orlov played 29 minutes, had a goal and an assist and blocked 3 shots.
Belfast 2, Paris 1
Paris must have thought they had an easy mark and didn’t really come to play. The champs were outshot 30-15 with Olivier Roland and Cody Hodgson scoring goals to do them in. Paris was undisciplined as they’ve ever been, taking 13 penalties in the game.
Berlin 7, Frankfurt 3
The Smurfs were angry again, and you just can’t deal with angry Smurfs. Fellow Germans Frankfurt re-learned that lesson on Wednesday. They were everywhere, outshooting the Inferno 43-16. They were particularly fearsome when they had a man … er, Smurf … advantage, going 4 for 8 on the powerplay. When the smoke cleared, Slava Voynov had added 2 goals and an assist to his point total and the league’s leading scorer, Logan Couture was up 2 goals to 19 on the season. Season 1 scoring champ Steven Stamkos scored his 15th of the season for Frankfurt. Berlin is now in 4th place in the Southern Conference and 6th overall. The Smurfs also injured two Frankfurt players. Taylor Pyatt and Nathan Gerbe now join teammate Vincent Lecavalier on the injured reserved list.
Moscow 4, London 2
Anze Kopitar was the main cog in the Moscow machine Wednesday, scoring a goal and getting two assists on goals scored by defensemen. The loss added mounting frustration for London General Manager Geoffrey Paul, who expressed his displeasure after the game, singling out goaltenders Marc-Andre Fleury and young Brayden Holtby. He said either is available for trade in an attempt to shore up the London defense and keep goals against down. Moscow widened its lead in the overall standings to 5 points on Wednesday.
Geneva 7, Prague 1
Prague couldn’t do much once Geneva got rolling. The Generals outshot the Cats 37-19. Thomas Vanek scored a goal and had two assists for the winners, while teammate Mike Fisher chipped in with two goals. The 2 points Geneva earned with the win ties them with Frankfurt for 8th place in the Southern Conference.
