Nicklas Lidstrom is one of several fan favorites who has retired from the EURO League.

Teemu Selanne won’t be speeding around the ice in a Gothenburg sweater any more. Daniel Alfredsson has traded a lockerroom in Milan for a rocking chair his family’s home in native Sweden, and Jaromir Jagr has retired from Belfast and hockey. And one of the best defensemen ever, Nicklas Lidstrom, has hung up the skates after being a driving force for the Geneva Generals these past two years.

The three legendary forwards and Lidstrom are among 77 players who officially retired from the EURO League today, officials in league headquarters in Austria have confirmed. None of the big three forwards seemed ready to be put out to pasture. Selanne, 43, scored 22 goals and 61 points this past season for the Devils. The season before, he scored 24 goals, 69 points and won the EURO Cup with Geneva. Alfredsson, 41, scored 57 points for Milan last year and finishes with 104 points in his two-year EURO League career. Jagr picked up his point totals at age 41, going from a 38-point season in Dublin to a 53-point campaign this past season in the league’s other Irish city. Lidstrom, 43, retires after a Cup win, 23 goals and 80 points in two seasons.

The league’s oldest players are now Ray Whitney and Martin Brodeur, both 41. Brodeur is still the top goalie in Gothenburg, posting a 3.39 goals against average and 88.9 save percentage this season in 64 appearances. Whitney scored 58 points in Berlin this season after a huge 95-point season with Bern. Whitney is an unrestricted free agent.

A complete list of retired players can be found by going to the GM Office tab, and the to “Withdrawn & Retired” under the “League Office” heading.
