Fantastiskt! Both Swedish teams earn wins

Stockholm 5, London 2

Mikko Koivu scored twice to start a five-goal Stockholm run in the third period, adding a hat trick goal into an empty net to cap it. London looked good after Michal Repik and Zach Bogosian scored to give them a 2-0 lead heading into the final period, but Stockholm stormed back fort he win. Spartan defensemen Travis Hamonic and Cam Fowler each scored 2 points and Cam Ward made 34 saves for the winners. Both teams are now 3-5 this season.

Gothenburg 6, Milan 1

Milan came into the game with the better record, but Gothenburg dominated on home ice, outshooting the Italians 35-18. Petr Vrana scored twice, his first two goals of the season, to earn first star designation. Teemu Selanne and Milan Lucic each scored his 4th of the season for the Devils, and Adam Henrique contributed with 3 assists. Not long after Vrana’s second goal made it 5-1, Mike Richards of Milan took on Lucic in a fight. Earlier Henrik Sedin scored for Milan to make the score 2-1 and it turned out to be the goal that kept Anders Lindback from notching his first career shutout. The win makes Gothenburg 4-4 this season and drops Milan to 5-3.

Copenhagen 4, Prague 2

Copenhagen only had two powerplays to work with against Prague on Monday, but they scored on their second man advantage to break a tie with just 4 minutes to go. Alex Goligoski’s slapshot got past Ryan Miller and into the Sparta goal.Tomas Fleischmann score two goals for the Tridents and was one of five Copenhagen players to finish the game with a plus 2 rating. Boyd Gordon wasn’t one of them, but he was quite impressive in his 10 minutes of ice time, delivering 6 hits and winning 9 of 13 faceoffs. Bryan Little of Prague, one of the league hottest players, scored his 9th goal and assisted on Dmitri Kulikov’s goal.

Dublin 5, Helsinki 3

Henrik Lundquist has been great this season for the Helsinki Jokerit. But he was great on Monday, giving up goals to 5 Dublin forwards. The Irish led 3-1 after the first period, with Milan Michalek leading the way with a goal and an assist. Evander Kane also ended with a goal and an assist for the Irish. Helsinki coach Barry Trotz gave his team some leeway after the loss, saying “We’ve been overachieving in many ways, and tonight it caught up to us. They dominated that third period, Henrik stood on his head but there’s only so much the goalie can do. Dublin played a great game, full marks to them.” With goals by Paul Stastny and Anthony Stewart in the second period, Helsinki actually had the game tied at 3-3 for a while. Evgeni Nabakov made 27 saves to earn the win.

Zurich 2, Madrid 1

Rookie Alex Radulov was the star in a close game, scoring both Zurich goals. Brayden Coburn was called for 2 penalties- the only ones  the Royals committed – and one of them was costly. On the powerplay, Manny Malhotra won a faceoff and got the puck to Jussi Jokinen, who fired a pass to Radulov on the far side of the net to make it 1-0. The young Russian scored his second of the game and third of the year early in the third period to make it 2-0. An older Russian, Sergei Gonchar, scored his first of the year for Madrid to ruin Niklas Backstrom’s shutout and make it a one-goal game. Zurich’s Damn Hamhuis and Jokinen were credited with 7 and 6 hits respectively, while Madrid’s Erik Karlsson and Gonchar each blocked 3 shots. More bad news for Madrid: Alex Tanguay didn’t play much in the third period and will be held out of a few games with an upper body injury. Tanguay has managed to get 19 shots on goal in 8 games, but his production has been non-existent. He has just one point, an assist. It is a far cry from Tanguay’s first season in the league, when he scored 23 goals and had 60 points in 67 games. Expect Brandon Prust – who played in 82 games for Madrid last year – or Patrick O’Sullivan, who made 21 appearances last season, to take Tanguay’s place.

Athens 6, Paris 1

Despite being outshot 33-21 by Paris the Greek shooters were deadly accurate against Tukka Rask in the Eiffels goal. Six different players scored for Athens and two others – Lubomir Visnovsky and Markus Kruger  – collected 2 assists each. With the score standing at 1-1 about halfway through the second period, Athens got rolling and Paris seemed to unravel. The Greeks put up 5 goals in about 9 minutes.Corey Crawford was spectacular in the Athens goal, making 32 saves for the 13, 682 Athens fans who bought tickets for the game and probably thought highly of their investment. Athens is now 4-3-1 while Paris falls to 2-4-2.
