Madrid 6, Frankfurt 5 (OT)
Fans in Madrid who watched an extra entertaining 60 minutes of hockey got two bonuses: more hockey in the form of sudden death overtime and a win for their boys. R.J. Umberger, who didn’t do too much in the game until the third period when his goal pulled the Royals to within one goal of the Inferno, was the overtime hero with 1:36 remaining, tipping in a pass from Jeff Carter. Frankfurt trailed 3-0 in the second and then scored 5 in a row including 2 by Steven Stamkos. Drew Doughty had 3 assists in that period. Six Madrid players had multi-point games, with Carter and Joe Pavelski leading the way with a goal and 2 assists each. The game was a battle of young goalies. Erik Ersberg made 31 saves to win for Madrid, while Frankfurt’s Kari Ramo made 36 saves. Shane O’Brien blocked 5 shots in front of Ramo.
Gothenburg 2, Bratislava 1
Five of the six EURO games played on Tuesday were one-goal games. In Bratislava, the visiting Devils conquered the Eagles on a third period goal by Jordan Eberle, who plays the right wing on Gothenburg’s second line with veteran Vinny Lecavalier and young Carl Hagelin. Eberle, the 22-year-old Canadian, had great offensive numbers last season, including 33 goals and 68 points in 82 games. Through 5 games this season, he’s on a pace to improve that total. He has 3 goals and 3 assists. Before the Eberle goal, Bratislava successfully killed off a 5-on-3 situation and right after the goal, they had to play shorthanded for 3:59. Marty Brodeur won by making 26 saves. Gothenburg and Bratislava are both 3-2.
Copenhagen 6, Edinburgh 2
Copenhagen’s powerplay was deadly, scoring 5 times in 10 chances. Two those goals were scored by Stephen Weiss. The game was tied 2-2 in the first period and in fact, John Tavares goals put the Capitals in the lead twice. Weiss wound up with 3 points, while teammates Andrew Ladd, Dany Heatley, Ville Peltonen, Carl Gunnarsson and Tomas Fleischmann all scored 2. For Edinburgh, James Neal had 2 assists and Jay Bouwmeester blocked 3 shots and had an assist.
Minsk 4, Munich 3 (OT-SO)
For some reason, rookie Tommy Powell was one of the three shootout shooters for Minsk. Good call, Mr. Claude Julien. Powell, a red-haired Australian who could pass for actor/producer Ronnie Howard, beat Robert Kristan with a deke and was the only scorer in the shootout. Carey Price stopped all three Munich shooters. The Fox had a 3-1 lead in the third period after getting goals from defensemen Joe Corvo, Matt Gilroy and Dan Boyle, but they couldn’t hold off the Hussars, who scored twice to force overtime. Munich outshot Minsk 42-22, including 4-0 in overtime.
Milan 4, Paris 3 (OT-SO)
The Milan win over Paris was eerily similar to the Minsk win except for the fact the winning team had more shots in Paris. The Rouges Eiffels were ahead 3-1 in the third period, but gave up two Milan goals and went to overtime and then a shootout, where Milan’s Matt Moulson was the only player who could score. Corey Perry scored his first two goals of the season for Paris and teammate Dmitri Orlov scored his first. Moulson had the game’s first goal, with teammates Daniel Alfredsson and rookie Dimitrios Kalyvas also scoring. Paris’ Evgeni Malkin assisted on both Perry goals, but the big Russian was battered in the faceoff circle, winning only 15 of 46 faceoffs.
Geneva 3, Bern 2 (OT)
Geneva handed their Swiss neighbors their first loss of the season, and they did so in dramatic fashion. Bern was riding a 2-1 lead to the buzzer when Geneva pulled their goalie. Michael Del Zotto, who took a puck in the mouth tonight and continued to play, set up fellow blueliner Dennis Wideman for a goal that tied it with 33 seconds remaining. Then, in the final 6 seconds of overtime, Del Zotto found Mike Fisher to the side of the net and Fisher beat Mike Smith between the pads to end it. Raffi Torres also scored for the Generals, while Radim Vrbata scored his second of the season for Bern and Jason Spezza, who was the second-leading score in the EURO League last season with 45 goals and 114 points, scored his first of Season 2. With the point for the overtime loss, the Bears are at the top of the standings.
