Stempniak the hero as Eagles oust Sparta

Lee Stempniak stunned the home crowd in Prague Saturday with a wristshot goal in overtime that eliminated the Sparta from the EURO playoffs and catapulted the Eagles into the second round. Prague seemed to have been doing everything right against the upstart seventh-seed in the seventh game of what was dubbed the Czechoslovakia series. The Sparta outshot Bratislava 46-38 and they were not whistled for a single penalty. They also had a 1-0 lead since 4:53 left in the first period after Ruslan Fedotenko beat Craig Anderson on a breakaway for his third of the playoffs. And they were successfully defending that one-goal lead with Ryan Miller in goal, until the last 3 and half minutes of regulation, with visions of the second round dancing in their head. Then Jonathan Toews plunged dagger number one into Prague. His sixth goal of the playoffs forced overtime. The overtime period started furiously with Miller and Anderson each making 4 saves in four minutes. Anderson ended up making 45 saves to earn the win. Then Martin Hanzal, a native Slovakian, poke-checked Fedotenko, took the puck, skated into the Prague zone, took it into the corner and passed back out to Stempniak, who collected the puck and shot in one smooth motion, beating Miller over the near-side shoulder. Bratislava’s penalty killers were able to thwart Prague six times in the game. Toews now has 13 points and leads all players in scoring after Round 1. The Sparta surely could have used the help of Ryan Getzlaf, who was injured in Game 3 after already piling up 5 goals. Bratislava will now move on to face another heavily-favored foe in Geneva. Munich will visit Bern for the first game of the other conference semi-final series.
