Cam Ward spent Friday in a hotel near Edinburgh listening to local media rave about the shutout Ilya Bryzgalov posted against Stockholm the night before. On Saturday, in his best Brooklyn accent, he said “Yeah, I got your shutout right here.” Ward slammed the door shut on the Capitals to lead the Spartans to a 2-0 victory that puts them in the verge of winning the playoff series and advancing to the next round. Stockholm played with fire in the first period, taking three minor penalties, but they were somehow able to emerge from the period up 2-0 on goals by Cam Fowler and Daniel Cleary. That’s how the score remained for the rest of the game. Brandon Dubinsky tried to rile up his teammates by fighting Ryan Clowe early in the third period, but Ward would have none of it. Jordan Leopold helped Ward during the game by blocking three Edinburgh shots. Derek Stepan was Edinburgh’s most effective player, getting 5 shots on Ward.
London 2, St. Petersburg 1 (OT)
London hockey fans got to celebrate Saturday as the Knights stopped the top-seeded Lynx with a goal four minutes into the third overtime period. Brendan Morrow scored the game winner after taking a drop pass from Tyler Bozak. Jake Gardiner also assisted on the play. For all three players, it was the first point of the series. St. Petersburg was trying to hold on to a 1-0 lead afforded them by a Brent Burns goal in the first period. Pekka Rinne was shutting out the Knights, looking like he and his mates were about to end the series and skate into the second round of the playoffs when Scott Gomez changed the itinerary. His goal with 6:20 remaining in regulation forced overtime and stimulated London’s lineup. From that point on, the younger legs in Knight uniforms took over. London outshot St. Petersburg 15-8 in the third period and 23-13 in overtime. St. petersburg had more powerplay chances (11 to 7) but Marc-Andre Fleury was spectacular, stopping 48 of 49 shots. Rinne made 56 saves for the Lynx.
Gothenburg 3, Copenhagen 1
Gothenburg and Copenhagen continue to slug it out in the playoffs, with the series now tied at 2-2. The good news for Copenhagen is that they have been able to keep the series deadlocked with Jonas Hiller in goal the whole time. Roberto Luongo, the team’s number one goalie, should be ready to go on Sunday when the series shifts back to Denmark for game 5. In the other net, veteran Marty Brodeur has played every game. On Saturday he was at the top of his game, making 29 saves. Only Jamie Langenbrunner, another veteran and former New Jersey Devil, could score on him. It was Langenbrunner’s 4th goal of the playoffs and it tied the contest in the first period. But Gothenburg was able to score once in each period – Cal Clutterbuck in the first, Daymond Langkow with 17 seconds left in the second, and Clutterbuck again with the insurance goal in the third. All three scores were powerplay goals. For Copenhagen, Andrej Meszaros played well, being credited with 5 hits and 2 blocked shots. But he might be done for the series with an upper body injury.
Dublin 6, Oslo 3
Ollie Jokinen led the way as the Fighting Irish battled back to a 2-2 series tie. The Finn had 2 goals and one assist. Tim Thomas kept the Devils at bay for the first two and a half periods, allowing his teammates to build a 5-1 lead that included two powerplay goals and a shorthanded tally by Jokinen. Tomas Fleischmann, Evander Kane and Ryan Kesler each had a goal and an assist for the Irish, while James Wisniewski had two assists. Fleischmann and Jokinen were plus 3 for the game. Oslo highlights included Daniel Sedin’s 2 goals and Ryan Suter’s 4 blocked shots.
