Anton Volchenkov is one of 7 players who were waived by Bern and picked up by other teams this season.

In the midst of the Helsinki Jokerit’s fight to retain the eighth and final playoff spot in the Northern Conference, they acquired a bit more reinforcement by plucking Ryan White off the waiver wire this week. The 23-year-old center  was waived by Minsk and comes to Helsinki with OK numbers for someone who has seen sporadic action on a third line: 4 goals and 4 assists in 19 games played, averaging more than a hit per game and not quite a blocked shot per game.

Helsinki has surged recently and actually passed Dublin, and they would have to drop a net 5 points in 15 games to fall out of it. White gives them more depth on the forward line and has been inserted on the right wing of the third line with Dainus Zubrus out with a relatively minor shoulder injury. So White offers immediate depth, but can he provide the extra boost that GM oldtimehockey and coach Barry Trotz are looking for to remain in the playoff picture? What can a player plucked from the waiver wire really provide?

Rose, in league headquarters in Vienna, stayed in Europe and let her daughter do the Thanksgiving cooking back in Fairlawn, N.J., so she could compile the following list showing what the waived-then-claimed players have done with their former teams and their new teams. White was the 16th player to be picked up on waivers this season. Bryan Allen was the first, finding a home in Frankfurt after leaving Geneva. Nick Johnson, the second waived player picked up, was later part of a trade and has been on three teams this season.  The Time On Ice column seems to have copied wrong.
