Stamkos the one to beat for scoring title

For the first weeks of the first EURO Hockey League season, Jason Spezza and his Bern Bear teammates seemed to be dominating the stats sheets. Two-thirds of the way into the season, however, the landscape looks different. Among the top 32 scorers in the league, 18 teams are represented.  Prague has four skaters in the top 32, Frankfurt has 3, nine teams including Bern have two players in the top 32 and seven teams have one player in that group.

Spezza is playing catch-up for the first time this season. His 86 points in 58 games have him three points behind Steven Stamkos of Frankfurt for the overall scoring title.  Stamkos has 89 points in 57 games.  Those two are also at the top of the goal scoring column, as Stamkos has 39 and Spezza has 37 goals. Joe Pavelski of Madrid is right on Spezza’s heels with 36 goals, while Paris’ Evgeny Malkin has 35. In assists, Jonathan Toews of Bratislava leads a tight field with 55 assists. Zach Parise of Prague is one behind, Stamkos’ linemate Claude Giroux is one behind Parise and Brad Richards of St. Petersburg is one behind Giroux.
