The $7.35 Million Dollar Man

Scott Gomez talks to reporters about why he still doesn’t have a European city to call home.

With only 13 picks left in the first ever EURO Hockey League draft, Alaska native Scott Gomez admitted he is starting to get nervous about not being drafted by a single team.

“I have to admit, I’m starting to wonder,” Gomez said from the same seat he’s been in at Vienna’s Mozart Ice Stadthalle since the draft began. “I don’t get it. I can skate, set up goal scorers, take faceoffs and sometimes win them … and then I see names like Patrick Kaleta and Tanner Glass go up on the board. What gives?”

Gomez said he doesn’t think his three-year, $7.35 million contract should be a deterrent to general managers looking for that final piece of the puzzle.

“You tellin’ me these guys haven’t saved enough money already? Surely they can afford me by now,” he said. “I’m worth every penny.”

Gomez looked noticeably startled when Athens went with defenseman Steve Eminger with its final pick of the draft.

“I figured I was Terry Poet’s kind of player and I thought we had a good meeting back in May,” Gomez said. “I thought for sure my name would be called there. I hope some other team, preferably in Athens’ division, gives me the chance to prove Poet wrong.”

The biggest name to be called today was defenseman Johnny Oduya, who will be going home to his native Sweden to play for Gothenberg. Oduya will earn less than half of what Gomez is asking for.

If he doesn’t get drafted, there is still a chance Gomez will find work, but he and his agent will have to be willing to accept a much, much, much smaller paycheck.

It is likely the draft will be completed Tuesday. Teams will then turn their attention to finding the right coach to work with their players.
